Part one: In this TBBO workshop, you will hear from Valerie and Michael Lipstein of Couples and Business.  

Michael Lipstein is a relationship expert who has worked with thousands of individuals, couples, and families since 1979.  He is a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist in the states of Washington and California and clinical member of The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.  He holds a Masters degree in Psychology.  His passion is to help couples who work together in business, and any couple wanting more, to create extraordinary, powerful relationships that keep love and intimacy alive.

Valerie Lipstein is a certified coach/entrepreneurial advocate, published author and national speaker.  She has worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs helping them take their business to the next level. As the founder and CEO of Couples and Business, she is passionate about working with spouse/couple run businesses supporting them to thrive personally and professionally.  In addition to Valerie’s coaching/consulting certifications, her background includes 30 years of combined experience in social work, law/mediation, and counseling.  She has a Juris Doctor degree and a B.A. in Social Work

Michael & Valerie have been together for 35+ years and they understand that relationships take commitment and attention. They have gone through some difficult times that almost broke them apart.  They created their signature program, Courageous Loving/Roadmap to Extraordinary Relationships, and their 7-Step System for entrepreneurial couples to help people wherever they are starting from, and no matter what the challenges, thrive in their intimate relationships and business endeavors.

In her presentation of The Partner Trap, Sheryl Hunter, Esquire will impart words of wisdom on the world of business partnerships, from dating to divorce.

“Over the last 2 decades I have witnessed the emotional and financial devastation resulting from toxic business relationships, which can cripple any company. Yet rarely are the challenges of owning a business with one or more other people talked about candidly, leading far too many people to walk down the aisle and say “I do” to a business marriage without adequate thought and planning. So I started giving presentations on The Partner Trap and writing a book by the same name. My intent is to help people evaluate whether to own a business with other people, how to structure co-owner relationships, and what to do if that relationship becomes destructive.”

  • Attendees will gain a real world glimpse into the  entrapment that a business partnership can become
  • Attendees will gain insights into how to evaluate whether the pros of having a business partner outweigh the cons
  • Attendees will be entertained and educated with a study of partner personality types
  • Attendees will learn about alternatives to having a business partner (we will explore options for contracting for services, providing an interest in profits without granting equity, and achieving goals without spending money through strategic joint venture arrangements)
  • Attendees will understand the need for a business partner “prenup” – a detailed operating/shareholder agreement that addresses the 4 Ds (death, disability, divorce and disagreement) and other foreseeable challenges such as needing more capital or breaking an impasse when there are 50/50 partners
  • Attendees will gain an understanding of how a business divorce can impact all aspects of a business and its owners
